How can I find out if I have an AAA?
Ultrasound scans offer a safe, painless and reliable way of detecting a AAA
Why do I want to know if I have a AAA
Small AAAs are very unlikely to burst, whereas very large ones are at risk of imminent rupture.
We can measure the size of a AAA and accurately predict the risk of it bursting.
The knowledge is vital in planning a strategy to prevent your AAA from ever bursting by either a traditional operation of by a minimally invasive route.
Who should be screened?
AAAs are more common with advancing age and more common in men than women.
People with hernias may also be at increase risk as these may be associated with a weakness in structural proteins generally in the body.
Smokers are at increased risk as cigarette smoking is associated with weakening of structural proteins in the body.
The UK government will in due course introduce screening for AAA. Screening will be limited to men by a single scan at the age of 65years.
How can I arrange a screening scan?
We can offer a scan to fit around your schedule
Leave a contact number and we will call to arrange when best suits you.
We scan at the Hammersmith Hospital, London but can arrange other locations in special cases.
There is no preparation and you do not need to be referred by a doctor but you will need to supply your doctor's details and bring a means of payment. Please do not use this service if you have symptoms or are concerned about other conditions. This service is for aortic scanning only; if we see anything else of concern we will tell you and your doctor but this service is not intended to assess the whole abdomen. We will be happy to carry out full abdominal ultrasound scan and we also have CT and MRI scanning facilities but please contact us first to discuss your problem.
